Andy Tarantino
The past is complicated, but the present is about growth and creativity. In the past, Andy Tarantino was a touring pop/rock musician, performing internationally. He now uses music as a tool to navigate his creative process, which can be emotional. Andy's work is a unique blend of abstract form and real-world observations, and it’s as much about personal change as it is about expression. The attic studio has become Andy's new stage, where he uses his passion for creativity to produce works that captivate and touches. Despite facing struggles with addiction in the past, Andy is now sober and channeling his experiences into his art. His creative process is both impulsive and deliberate. At first, he works from the heart, applying bold brush strokes to the canvas with quick, intuitive movements. The canvases are typically laid on the floor, allowing Andy to fully immerse himself in the moment. However, after the initial burst of energy, he takes a step back and begins to refine his work. He spends weeks carrying the painting with him in his mind, thinking about how it is evolving and where it might finish its journey. He adds something here, he changes something there. As the painting slowly approaches its final form, heart and head join forces and something new begins.
“Today will pass" is a sequence of works that resemble geological survey maps. This series was inspired by Andy's own journey towards sobriety, and the idea that no matter what struggles we may face, time will continue to pass and bring change
I am self-taught. When I was a teenager, I would often sit and draw in my room, mainly comics. I didn’t put in an effort at school which meant that I could not get into any schools after high school. Then I managed to get into an art/design program. But I didn’t take that very seriously either! However, I found some guys to start a band with. That was how music became my main thing.
